What we have achieved
So far, donations, covenants and fund-raising events to support our projects have raised:
- £3,800 for the construction of a water tank in Malungeni in the Transkei, the original home of many people now living on the Cape Flats. The local people, who had already built a community centre with their own hands, needed the water to sustain a bakery and an agricultural unit. The tank fills with rain water.
- Over £200,000 to pay the modest salaries of after-school teachers for the Rainbow School Homework Teaching Project. This project helps children improve their educational achievements, the only tools they have to obtain work and raise their living standards. Their homes in the township are often cramped, noisy and badly lit making it impossible to do homework. We also provide about £500 a month to pay for a cooked meal every school day and to contribute to the Rainbow School's library. Grants from the Zebra Trust in the UK have enabled us to support the School's bursary fund for ex-pupils in secondary education.
