Empowering Children to Have a Better Future by Funding Education in South Africa

The Rainbow Fund for South Africa runs a homework school for 200 under privileged children in the township of Guguletu in South Africa, giving them a safe, caring and stable environment to study and grow.

To further assist them in this goal the fund began a voluntary Skills Programme to up-skill both the children and their parents, providing them with practical skills to take out into the workforce.

What We Have Achieved, Collectively

Step by step, we are building the confidence of the children and giving them hope for a brighter future. Each year, we raise between £30,000 and £40,000 through donations and fundraising events. Run entirely by volunteers 100% of the funds raised goes straight to the school.

“I have traveled extensively & filmed in South Africa from the late 1970s to the present day, interviewing everyone from children in the townships to Nelson Mandela.

I have seen the conditions in the Cape Flats & how difficult it is for young people to find calm & space to do their work. The Rainbow Fund’s role is ideally suited to help with the problem: direct, hands on, knowledgable & imaginative. I strongly recommend you to support it.”

The Skills Programme

In 2021 the Skills Programme was set up for both children and adults. The fund wanted to utilise Friday afternoons when there is no Homework School to facilitate the Skills Programme.

The fund identified two large gaps in the Curriculum of Government Junior Schools. Firstly, no computer skills are taught and the children have no access to computers at home, despite more and more assignments being set on computers. Secondly, there are no Arts and Crafts classes at school for the children allowing them to express themselves. So, this is where the Skills Programme started.

It now also offers Plumbing Workshops for parents and community members, helping women become more self-sufficient and the Programme has even enabled some women to gain employment.
