Who Are We
We are a small charity based in Richmond Upon Thames, England that finances a homework school for more than 200 primary school children in Guguletu Township, 20 minutes from the centre of Cape Town in South Africa.
Guguletu was established in the 1960s as a black residential area in the Apartheid era. It has swollen in population size to over 100,000 people and has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. The Township has a high level of crime and violence due to substance abuse and gangsterism and lack of water and proper sanitation. The community is poor with many children orphaned or living with uneducated grandparents or guardians who are unable to assist them with their school work.
The Homework School is an after school facility for pupils in Junior School aged 6 to 14, operating from Monday to Friday from 3.00 to 5.00 pm. The Government Junior Schools have oversized classes where the teachers have little time to give any extra support for struggling pupils so this is where we come in.
We give additional support, guidance and assist with their progress through school which enables some of them to eventually go on to University.
Many of the children have no facilities in their over cramped homes to do their homework nor can they rely on their parents assistance. Not only can the 8 teachers assist them with their work but they also provide a caring environment away from the violence of the streets.
We also ensure each child is given a hot nutritious meal when they arrive, often the only hot meal they will eat in the day.
